French companies will buy carbon offsets generated by Tunisian wind project

According to carbon market news this January, French businesses will purchase carbon credits from a Tunisian wind power project. The deal will likely send half of the offsets to the carbon project development firm Orbeo. The agreement will see the carbon credits purchased by CDC Climat, a unit of the Caisse des Depots bank (owned by the French state).

The Tunisian wind project is a 190MW Wind Farm at Bizerte. The project will generate 350,000 CERs, all of which will be sold by the Societe Tunisienne de L’Electricite et du Gas, a utility owned by the Tunisian government. The news was revealed in a joint statement issued by the three companies.

The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Project will be registered by the U.N. later this year, and is due to start earning credits from 2014 to 2020. The fee for the Certified Emissions Reductions remains to be seen, and is also likely to vary depending on the price of CERs in the secondary markets. Orbeo, and experienced project developer, will help to drive the carbon project through the CDM registration pipeline.
